The Bassoon is a very unique instrument.
It is sometimes called the 'clown' of the orchestra because of its unique quality and the fun melody lines and effects that it is able to produce when required.
The Bassoon is quite a long instrument as you can see from the picture
It is a member of the Double Reed family, meaning that it is played by placing a reed made of two pieces of cane bound together into the mouth.
This is a picture of a Bassoon Reed.

This picture shows how the instrument is held.
A special strap is used to support the instrument whilst the reed is placed in the mouth to produce the sound.
If you have a natural ability to work on the 'double reeds' playing this instrument is easy.
This is a young adult holding the instrument.
As you can see it is quite large, however, there is no reason why a mature, primary age student could not handle this instrument.

We rarely see the Bassoon in Primary School Bands because of its size and expense, however, for the student who at some time in the future may decide to study music at tertiary level, this is an excellent choice.
Bassoon players are always in demand, and there is not the same level of competition for tertiary places as there is for Flutes, clarinets and other more common instruments.
